What exactly is ‘fixed wire testing’?

Fixed wire testing tests the systems which carry electricity around a building or warehouse. You might also have heard it being called Periodic Testing or Periodic Examination in the past.

Fixed wire testing is a legal requirement for all businesses and ensures a safe environment for both staff and visitors. Testing is carried out to check for overloaded circuits, faults with power outlets, and other potential shock or fire hazards.

 How often an organisation requires a fixed wire testing examination depends on a number of factors, such as the size of the building and the amount of electricity the organisation is likely to use.

As a general rule, offices are required to be inspected around every five years and its not uncommon for larger organisations to test one part of the premises at a time to spread costs and disruption.

Once fixed wire testing has been completed by a trained and qualified electrical engineer, the organisation is produced with what is known as an Electrical Installation Condition Report or EICR, showing that the examination has been carried out according to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
