open space collaborative work

You’ve probably heard the term ‘agile working’ thrown around quite a lot in recent years. And it means something different to each business.

This definition from The Agile Organisation is probably the best way of defining what we mean by agile working:

“Agile working is about bringing people, processes, connectivity and technology, time and place together to find the most appropriate and effective way of working to carry out a particular task. It is working within guidelines (of the task) but without boundaries (of how you achieve it).”

In short, agile working is a way of enabling your employees to react to sudden developments (like an unexpected deadline for example) and giving them the space to do just that. It also aims to improve efficiency and boost employee morale all at the same time.

So how can you make your workplace suitable for agile working?

Removing boundaries – and not just physical ones

How your office is designed can have a major impact on how your teams collaborate and work effectively together. Open-plan designs allow people to move freely and not feel restricted by enclosed offices, while giving them the necessary space to focus.

Of course, there are other ‘boundaries’ which can be removed to make your office ‘agile working ready’. Access to technology, such as conference call facilities or power outlets for laptops, means that your teams can carry out their tasks even if they are all based in different locations, with the tools necessary to do so.

Many businesses are now offering flexible hours and other incentives, which have been shown to boost employee morale. These, accompanied by the right workplace layout, ensures your employees are valued and are able to work to their best potential.

How agile workspaces fit in with your office and culture

Every business is unique and has its own set of values. Naturally, what works well for one organisation may not work well for another. And that’s completely fine!

In fact, that’s one of the benefits of agile workspaces – that they can be designed for you and your teams’ individual needs. Agile workspaces help to create that sense of unity and that everyone is connected. This, in turn, encourages collaboration and enhances productivity.

By providing your teams with the space to carry out their tasks, and trusting them to work together, you can all pull together to achieve your goals.
